All over the world, in cities
and towns, out in the country or along
lonely stretches of highway, one can easily find vacant lots.
Some of
these have been abandoned or forgotten, some are for sale or awaiting
development.
Whatever
the history or possible future of these
properties, to Euphorium, they are priceless, vital pieces of Mother
Earth.
We want to "green" as many of them as possible, for as long
as
possible, practicing and modeling the most natural, most beautiful,
most sustainable
systems of agriculture known to man. |

A
Euphorium Garden, however temporary, creates value all around.
For the property owner, it can provide a substantial tax
write-off while dramatically improving the appearance and visibility of
the lot. For a neighborhood, it can become the catalyst for community
clean-up, beautification and improvement, raising property values and
quality of life. The garden can be an ideal natural setting for
community celebrations and simple rituals to mark the changing seasons.
A Euphorium Garden can produce food crops for the
neighborhood or for distribution at local food-banks; it can be used to grow healing herbs
or endangered plant species
while modeling and teaching sustainable organic gardening practices.
And of course, a Euphorium Garden provides job
opportunities for gardeners, farmers, and landscape
architects,
uniting them with volunteers and local businesses in the creation of
something wholly beneficial.
Eventually,
if a property is scheduled for construction or other use, the
lot can quickly be restored to its original
condition, though certain owners might choose to incorporate portions of the
garden ethic into their development plan.
Regardless, it is our hope that the presence of a
thriving garden upon the land will inspire owners, developers and
architects toward a
deep acknowledgement of the land's identity as Earth -- as a living
system to
collaborate with, rather than as an inanimate platform to build upon.
Though
Euphorium is in its infancy as an organization, we have already begun
the process of locating potential lots and negotiating for rights to
establish temporary gardens on them. For now, a few choice
gardens is a great start, but to create sweeping change and establish
thousands of gardens world-wide, Euphorium needs YOU!
Do
you currently own vacant property which is
a
year or
more away from development?
Would
you be willing to scout your
neighborhood for vacant lots
and
let us know where they are?
We welcome
any help or advice in carrying this process forward.
